My son got a call and a text from them. They told him an audit had turned up evidence he"d defrauded on his taxes for 2011-2015 and he owed 00+. When I questioned them how he could have defrauded the IRS in those years as a minor with no income who was a dependent of mine, she got angry and asked if I would be paying today or take my chances for my son to be jailed for fraud. I asked for her id# and she gave me 4 random digits and I told her that number was missing several numbers (I have no idea if this is actually a thing, let alone how many numbers there actually are if it is). She hung up on me.

Obvious scam--the IRS send politely phrased letters at first; the stiffly word ones come later, and only if you"re being obstreperous. Anyway, my favorite IRS scam was a live. call (the above was robo). A man with a strong Indian accent claimed to be calling from the "IRS, Department of Fraud.. "I laughed and said, "At least you"re honest." There was a long pause, then he hung up on me.

First I got a recorded message saying this was my last chance before I got arrested for committing fraud on the IRS. I called the number back & a man with a NOT American accent answered. I asked him what his name was & he said, "I will spell it for you." Then he spelled out "unknown person".
